Best DIY Projects for Your Wedding

We all know how easily weddings and events can spiral out of control when it comes to cost. We are so excited to be seeing a rise in DIY wedding decor over the past few wedding seasons. From signage & stationary, to thrifted seating, nearly-weds are getting more and more creative when it comes to their big day.

At the Pop-Up Chapel we make a conscious effort to provide weddings and primarily Chapel decor without the ecological footprint of other luxury wedding services. This is always challenging, but in the end it leads to some incredibly creative ideas and unique outcomes. We endeavour to incorporate as much pre-loved, up-cycled, and DIY decor as possible. This is not only a simple way to reduce cost and waste, but a great way to connect with the work we’re doing, by investing time in hands-on event creation.

While the couples married at The Pop-Up Chapel are not involved in the production process, there are many newly engaged couples out there looking for wedding DIY recommendations, and so this blog is for them. Whether you’re doing everything yourself, or just looking for an easy way to trim costs, this blog has the insider info on where to start!

Signage:

Creating your own signage is the best way to cut costs while elevating the look of your wedding. Designing your own stationary and signage allows you to completely customize a design element for your wedding day to reflect your style and vision, and potentially even better, it's a way to guarantee it is completely unique to your event. If you’re new to the graphic design world, Canva is the greatest place to start. For $0 you have access to hundreds of templates to inspire you and a solid toolkit of design and customization elements. When it comes to printing, especially for the larger signs, shop around for the right print shop! The PUC team is LOYAL to Mr. Signs in Etobicoke, because of their speedy turnaround times, quality printing and low, low prices.

Decor Accents:

I guarantee you have decor pieces in your home that can easily be incorporated into your wedding to enhance the decor. The PUC team is consistently using pre-loved vases, rugs, throw pillows, and more, to accent and elevate Chapel decor. This is also a really nice way to reflect your own style in your wedding. If you’re looking for trendy yet thrifty ways to build a ceremony backdrop, or a cocktail hour space, start with either your favourite pieces in your home, or the pieces you’ve been hanging on to but don’t have a space for in your home! This might be the moment they shine.

Florals:

If you’re looking to trim your floral budget, consider designing and making your own bouquet, bud vases, or centrepieces. Wholesale floral markets offer the same blooms for a lower price! Don’t get us wrong, if you’re looking for floral arrangements and installations, always go with a florist. There are plenty of mechanics and hours that go into an installation, so leave that stuff to the professionals, especially on the morning of your wedding! But if you have the ambition and talents to take on the smaller pieces yourself, like single stem bud vases or potted plants, the resources are available!

Planning and Organizing:

Although we do want you to let us plan your wedding, we also know that some nearly-weds are excited to plan their own day, so we want to support you in doing that! Here are a list of FREE wedding planning resources to help you with various tasks:

  • Prismm (formerly all seated): for planning your seating chart, venue decor and event flow.

  • Canva: (It’s worth mentioning twice) Easy and free way to create stationary, signage, organizers and more

  • EventSource: detailed search engines for venues and services in your area

  • Mint: A sister app to Quickbooks and Mail Chimp, Mint is a free and easy method of tracking finances to help keep the whole wedding on budget!

  • Splitwise: Whether you’re splitting the venue payments with your fiancé/ée, or splitting Bachelorette party costs with your besties, Splitwise is the easiest way to divide.

There are HUNDREDS of different ways to cut costs, reduce waste, and differentiate your wedding from all the rest. We believe thrifting, up-cycling and DIY projects are a simple and accessible way to accomplish all three of these goals while planning your nuptials.
